Medicine has failed chronic pain patients. Here’s what they need | Psyche Ideas
This article provides a potted history of modern pain medicine and reflects on the writings of Dr Bonica, a pain physician and founder of the speciality.
It describes the disastrous over prescription of opiates over several decades and the abject misery it has brought upon millions of people’s lives. The article also points out the epidemic of opiate prescription was based on barely evidence of benefit and worse still a deceitful, duplicitous and self-serving message that it would not cause harm.
The article further explores how many treatments both pharmacological and interventional (i.e., injections) have been offered over the years to a vulnerable patient group both with and without necessarily the best intention but again with little evidence for their benefit.
It explores alternative approaches to managing chronic pain and specifically describes the “solid” evidence base for a acceptance and commitment therapy approach which should be considered.
