Leaves on the stream metaphor:

The “Leaves on a Stream” metaphor from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) helps people develop cognitive defusion; the ability to notice thoughts without becoming entangled in them. Rather than fighting, judging, or believing every thought, we imagine placing each thought on a leaf and watching it float by on a stream. The goal is not to get rid of thoughts, but to change our relationship with them so they have less power over our actions.

As practitioners, we’re often taught techniques, but the real learning comes from understanding the processes beneath them.

In our programme, we invite clients to place their thoughts on leaves floating down a stream, noticing them without getting caught up in them. The metaphor reminds us that thoughts are events in the mind, not commands we must obey.

It helps build psychological flexibility and a healthier relationship with difficult experiences.

What’s powerful is that practitioners benefit from this learning too. Before we can guide others in noticing thoughts with openness and curiosity, we need opportunities to experience these processes ourselves.

Our Practitioner Programme goes beyond learning interventions. It explores the theory, practice, and personal application of ACT, helping practitioners develop the confidence and skills to use these approaches effectively with clients.

Like watching leaves drift down a stream, the journey starts by learning to step back, observe, and respond with greater flexibility.
