New evidence suggests we may have been looking at only part of the picture.
A recent review proposes that OA is influenced by a dynamic gut-brain-liver-kidney network, where microbial metabolites, neuroendocrine signaling, metabolic health, and systemic inflammation all contribute to disease progression and pain. Researchers argue that understanding these connections could unlock more targeted, mechanism-based therapies.
This also helps explain why 12% of hip replacements and 20% of knee replacements are associated with ongoing chronic pain.
The future of OA management may depend not only on protecting cartilage, but also on improving metabolic, neurological, and gut health.
A reminder that in medicine, no organ operates in isolation.
