The genetic architecture of fibromyalgia across 2.5 million individuals | Nature Medicine

 

A landmark study published in Nature Medicine has provided some of the strongest biological evidence to date that fibromyalgia is a disorder involving the central nervous system.

Analysing genetic data from more than 2.5 million people, researchers identified 26 genetic risk loci associated with fibromyalgia and found that its genetic signature is strongly linked to brain and neural pathways.

The findings reinforce the understanding that fibromyalgia is not “all in the mind”, but a complex condition with measurable biological foundations.

The study also highlighted strong genetic connections between fibromyalgia and other chronic pain conditions, PTSD, and irritable bowel syndrome, helping explain why so many people experience multiple overlapping symptoms.
